“Under the Rose”

All kinds of little secrets are hidden in this jewel-colored painting.

As I was painting it, I couldn’t help but connect how it can be so much like life.

Self-imposed limitations eventually give way to frustration, a feeling of being stuck, giving up, and finally, as if hidden in the secret shadows, emerges a sight of something singularly beautiful…a rose.

The term “under the rose”, or sub rosa, means “in secret”. And that’s exactly what this felt like. Except in this case, the secret was revealed.

“Just remember in the winter
Far beneath the bitter snows
Lies the seed that with the sun’s love
In the spring becomes the rose”
